Biography

Michael Gustafson received a B.S.E. in 1993 from Duke University, majoring in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science. He continued at Duke, earning an M.S. in 1998 and a Ph.D. in 1999 in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. He joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an Assistant Professor of the Practice in 2005 and was promoted to Associate Professor of the Practice in 2009. Gustafson previously served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and as a Lecturing Fellow in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. He currently holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. His primary focus is on undergraduate curriculum and laboratory development, having taught numerous courses that have enrolled over 9000 students. Additionally, Gustafson has a notable military background, having served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, where he was awarded multiple medals for his service. He has received several accolades for his teaching and mentoring, including the Lois J. and L. Imhoff Distinguished Teaching Award in 2023 and the Capers Marion McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising in 2005.
