Biography

Gustafson received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) in 1993 from Duke University, majoring in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science. He continued at Duke to obtain a Master of Science (M.S.) in 1998 and a Ph.D. in 1999, both in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. He was appointed as Assistant Professor of the Practice in Electrical & Computer Engineering in 2005 and was promoted to Associate Professor of the Practice in 2009. Gustafson has taught a variety of courses, focusing primarily on undergraduate curriculum and laboratory development, including a first-year course in Computational Methods Engineering. He has also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and as a Lecturing Fellow and Assistant Chair in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Gustafson has received several awards for mentoring and teaching, including the 2023 Lois and John L. Imhoff Distinguished Teaching Award from the Pratt School of Engineering, and the 2005 Capers Marion McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising. Additionally, he has a background in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander and has received multiple medals for his service. His current research interests include computational methods, image analysis, information extraction, discrete event simulations, and curriculum development and deployment.
