Gustafson received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) in 1993 from Duke University, majoring in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science. Gustafson has received several awards for mentoring and teaching, including the 2023 Lois and John L. Imhoff Distinguished Teaching Award from the Pratt School of Engineering, and the 2005 Capers Marion McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising. Additionally, he has a background in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander and has received multiple medals for his service. His current research interests include computational methods, image analysis, information extraction, discrete event simulations, and curriculum development and deployment.
