Biography

Michael Gustafson obtained his B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1993, later earning both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from the same institution in 1998 and 1999, respectively. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke in 2005, being promoted to Associate Professor of the Practice in 2009. Reflecting his dedication to education, Gustafson has taught numerous engineering courses, impacting around 9000 students over his tenure. He has received several awards for his mentorship and teaching effectiveness, including the Lois John L. Imhoff Distinguished Teaching Award in 2023 and the Capers Marion McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising in 2005. In addition to his academic pursuits, Gustafson served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, earning multiple commendations. His research interests span computational methods, image analysis, information extraction, and discrete event simulations, aligning with his commitment to enhancing engineering education.
