Biography

Professor Michael G Hanna is a leader in Clinical Neurology at University College London, where he is the Director of the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. With over 1,200 staff and an annual budget of £100 million, his institute focuses on translating preclinical research into first-in-man trials and clinical studies aimed at developing therapies for diseases such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Professor Hanna has significantly increased research funding from £48 million to £360 million in active grants over the past decade and has overseen a remarkable expansion in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, growing from 84 to 500 students. He holds a wealth of leadership experience, including a past role as Director of the National Hospital Neurology and Neurosurgery. His clinical expertise and leadership in neuromuscular diseases led to the establishment of one of the world's largest care and research centers in this field. Professor Hanna has published over 450 peer-reviewed articles and has secured £40 million in personal research funding. He is also a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and serves as a senior investigator with the National Institute for Health Research.
