Biography

K. Michael Hays is the Eliot Noyes Professor of Architectural Theory at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and co-director of the Master Design Studies program. Having joined the faculty in 1988, he has been instrumental in the development of architectural theory and is recognized for his scholarship on European modernism and critical theory. His work addresses theoretical issues in contemporary architectural practice, with published pieces focusing on the contributions of modern architects such as Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Mies van der Rohe, and contemporary figures including Peter Eisenman and Bernard Tschumi. He founded the scholarly journal 'Assemblage', which serves as a primary forum for discussions of architectural theory in North America and Europe. Hays has served in significant academic roles, including chairing the PhD Committee from 1995 to 2005 and was appointed Adjunct Curator of Architecture at the Whitney Museum of American Art from 2000 to 2009. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1976, a Master of Architecture in Advanced Studies from MIT in 1979, and a Doctor of Philosophy in History, Theory, and Criticism of Architecture and Art in 1990.
