Biography

Michael Hayward is a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and a Tutorial Fellow at Somerville College, University of Oxford. He completed his D.Phil. at Oxford under the supervision of Professor M. J. Rosseinsky and gained post-doctoral experience with Professor R. J. Cava at Princeton University. After returning to Oxford in 2002, he held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship at Merton College before being appointed to his current position at Somerville College in 2004. His research interests include the synthesis and study of novel solids that exhibit unusual electronic and magnetic behaviors, with a focus on low temperature solid-state synthesis techniques that allow for greater control over product selection. He also explores the design of solid-state compounds through kinetic control and has been recognized with the Meldola Prize in 2002.
