Biography

Michael Heller is the Lawrence Wien Professor of Real Estate Law at Columbia Law School, where he also serves as Vice Dean of Academic Affairs. With a J.D. from Stanford Law School and an A.B. from Harvard University, he specializes in private law theory, property, and contracts, among other areas. Heller's work has tackled significant themes including innovation, corporate governance, and land ownership by African-American and Native American communities. He is the author of 'Mine! How the Hidden Rules of Ownership Control Our Lives' and 'The Gridlock Economy: How Too Much Ownership Wrecks Markets, Stops Innovation, and Costs Lives', both highlighting the complexities and paradoxes of ownership. Heller has published extensively in leading law journals and was awarded the L. Hart Wright Award for excellence in teaching during his tenure at the University of Michigan Law School. He has also taught at NYU, UCLA, and Yale Law Schools, and has experience working with the World Bank on post-socialist legal transitions.
