Biography

Michael Herring is a JUNO-nominated double-bassist and composer based in Toronto, who writes, performs, and records across genre lines, being equally comfortable in jazz, folk, world, and pop/rock settings. He is a major contributor of original music to various groups and leads or co-leads ensembles such as the Michael Herring Quartet, a chordless two-saxophone band inspired by 1960s jazz, particularly the work of Mingus and Ellington. Herring’s band, Way North, a collaboration between New York, Toronto, and Ottawa musicians, explores traditional folk music through improvisation, and was recognized by the Ottawa Citizen as one of the top Canadian jazz albums in 2015. He also co-leads the modern-jazz quartet Peripheral Vision, noted for recording five albums and maintaining a busy touring schedule, and received the Galaxie Rising Star Award at the Montreal Jazz Festival. One of his works, Michael Herring's Vertigo, features contributions from acclaimed New York saxophonist David Binney and was highlighted as one of Jazz New York’s Top 5 debut albums in 2006. Herring has shared the stage with numerous notable musicians and was awarded the Chalmers Arts Fellowship by the Ontario Arts Council, which allowed him an extended stay in New York City.
