Biography

Michael Herrmann received his Diploma in Mathematics from the University of Leipzig in 1988 and a Doctorate from the same institution in 1993. His PhD focused on the mathematical aspects of artificial neural networks. He has held a temporary position as an assistant professor at the University of Goettingen and subsequently was appointed as a lecturer in Robotics at the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh. He has acted as the principal supervisor for five PhD students at the University of Edinburgh and has been a principal or co-supervisor for ten successful PhD students, mainly at the University of Goettingen. In recent years, he has taught courses on reinforcement learning for MSc students, natural computing for undergraduate students, and co-taught an introductory course on vision robotics for undergraduates. He is involved in various research interests, including self-organisation, robot learning, and biomedical data analysis.
