Biography

Michael Howlett is the Burnaby Mountain Professor and Canada Research Chair at the Department of Political Science at Simon Fraser University. He has been a faculty member at SFU since 1989, previously teaching at Queen’s University and the University of Victoria. He has held visiting professor positions at several institutions including the National University of Singapore and the University of Cagliari. His expertise lies in public policy, policy design, and public administration. He has published leading textbooks and numerous articles on topics related to Canadian politics, natural resource and environmental policy, policy instruments, and public policy-making. He serves as the editor-in-chief of Policy Sciences and is a co-editor for multiple journals including the Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis and Policy & Society. His current research focuses on policy formulation and the study of policy tools and instruments. With extensive experience in policy analysis, he actively supervises graduate students and is accepting new students in areas such as public policy and democratic governance.
