Biography

Mike Inouye grew up in the Seattle area and began his undergraduate study at the University of Washington in 1999, graduating with degrees in Biochemistry and Economics. At 19, he started analyzing data for the Human Genome Project, dedicating years to research in gene finding and protein structure prediction. He continued his studies on protein structure at UCLA and returned to genomics in 2005 when he moved to the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK, to complete his PhD under the mentorship of Professors Leena Peltonen and Gert-Jan van Ommen. At the Sanger, he was deeply involved in large-scale genome-wide association studies and the integration of multi-omic data. Following a postdoctoral position at the Walter Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, Australia, he joined the faculty at the University of Melbourne in 2012, where he built a research program focused on systems genomics and its applications in clinical public health. In 2017, he was recruited by the Baker Institute and the University of Cambridge to establish a lab that spans Australia and the UK, addressing core areas like systems genomics, polygenic risk scores, and integrated analysis of multi-omics data. The aim of his lab is to alleviate the burden of disease using interdisciplinary strengths in statistics and bioscience, leveraging the latest genomic and biomolecular technologies.
