Michael Jennions is an evolutionary biologist with a special interest in behavioural ecology. He mainly focuses on sexual selection and reproductive decisions, exploring areas such as female choice, male-male competition, sperm competition, and parental care. Through empirical research involving detailed observation of animal behaviour in both laboratory and field settings, he aims to determine causality and collect data on phenotypic correlations. His work on model species, particularly the mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki, investigates how traits relate to fitness-enhancing behaviours. Jennions also has a long-standing interest in meta-analysis, quantitative reviews of field studies that utilize custom-designed statistics to answer significant ecological and evolutionary questions. He collaborates with colleagues including Hanna Kokko and Lutz Fromhage to develop and explain theories on sexual selection. Jennions holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, awarded in 1996, and has served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence and the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology.
