Biography

Michael Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. A veteran of the United States Army, he served as a physical therapist for 21 years, retiring in July 2015. He graduated from the Physical Therapy Program at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, and earned a Doctorate of Science in Sports Physical Therapy from Baylor University after completing the Army/Baylor Clinical Sports Residency at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Throughout his military career, Dr. Johnson undertook various clinical assignments and was deployed to Afghanistan multiple times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He holds dual physical therapy licenses in New York and Oregon and is certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists in orthopedics (2001) and sports (2006). He continues to practice at the Cadet Physical Therapy Clinic at the United States Military Academy and serves as a faculty member and director of the Army/Baylor Sports Clinical Residency. His research interests encompass diagnostic imaging, orthopedics, clinical case management, physical agents, and pharmacology, while his expertise includes direct access/military medicine, orthopedics/sports rehabilitation, and injury prevention in adolescent athletes.
