Dr. Michael Johnson

Biography

Professor Michael Johnson is an esteemed academic in Engineering and Computer Science, serving at the University of New South Wales and as Emeritus Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Macquarie University. His research primarily focuses on Category Theory, specifically the development of tools for mathematics in higher dimensional category theory and Applied Category Theory. With a rich history of engagement in consultancy since the early 1990s, Professor Johnson has played a pivotal role in numerous conferences in computational category theory, including his involvement as Program Chair for the upcoming Applied Category Theory Conference at the University of Oxford in 2024. His previous leadership positions include Head of the Department of Computing from 1997 to 2000 and Associate Director of the Centre of Australian Category Theory from 1999 to 2015. He has consistently contributed to the academic community through his roles in the Australian Computer Society and has held prestigious positions like the Chair of the Seoul Accord. A dedicated educator, he received the inaugural Australian Award for University Teaching in 1997. Professor Johnson is a fellow of multiple professional organizations, including the Australian Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Society, and has been recognized with honorary memberships for his contributions to the field.
