Biography

Michael Johnston received his BSc and PhD from the University of New South Wales in Australia and completed a postdoctoral position at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory. He joined the faculty of the University of Oxford's Department of Physics in 2002. He currently leads a research group specializing in semiconductor physics, photovoltaics, and terahertz photonics. His work includes the development of terahertz methods to study the electronic properties of nanomaterials, the creation of new high-efficiency vapor-deposited solar cells, and the invention of novel terahertz emitters, modulators, and receivers. His research has been recognized with a series of awards, including the EPSRC Established Career Fellowship in 2020, the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2019, the Harrie Massey Medal from the Australian Institute of Physics in 2018, and the IUMRS Somiya Award in 2017. Johnston was listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College.
