Biography

Michael Joseph served as co-PI on federally funded grants related to heterosexual Black men's HIV transmission risks. He is a highly regarded teacher and curricular innovator recognized with the prestigious SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013. Over the past decade, he has taught the American Public Health Association Learning Institute course 'Biostatistics for Non-Statisticians,' which aims to fill the gap in public health proficiency for students with varying levels of knowledge, skills, and expertise. Internationally, Joseph has extensive experience building biostatistics and epidemiology capacity, having conducted training sessions in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Estonia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. He is passionate about developing a diverse generation of public health professionals, teaching introductory biostatistics through pipeline programs designed to steer students from disadvantaged backgrounds towards careers in health and public health. Some of these programs include the Summer Enrichment Program in Health Policy, the Future Public Health Leaders Program at the University of Michigan, the Project IMHOTEP Public Health Leader Fellowship Program at Morehouse College, and the Health Science Academy at the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health at SUNY Downstate. Joseph is known for his intense commitment to students at all educational levels and has received numerous awards for outstanding mentorship.
