Biography

Michael S. Kang is a nationally recognized expert in campaign finance, voting rights, redistricting, judicial elections, and corporate governance. He is the co-author of the book 'Free Judge: Power Campaign Money Judicial Elections' (Stanford, 2023) alongside Joanna Shepherd. His research is widely published in leading law journals and has been featured in major media outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Forbes. Recent work includes an examination of partisan gerrymandering and the influence of campaign finance on judicial elections, as well as the implications of deregulating campaign finance following the Citizens United decision. His empirical work on judicial campaign ads and their effects on judges' criminal law decisions was highlighted by the American Constitution Society. Professor Kang was appointed by President Biden to the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States. He holds degrees from the University of Chicago and Harvard University, including a PhD in Government and a JD. With a background that includes clerking for Judge Kanne of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and working at Ropes & Gray in Boston, he has a rich history in legal scholarship and practice.
