Dr. Michael Kaplowitz

Biography

Michael Kaplowitz is a professor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University (MSU), specializing in environmental law, resource economics, and sustainable development. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Economics from Union College, his Juris Doctor from Duke University, and furthered his education with a Master's in Latin American Studies and Environmental Policy from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. Kaplowitz completed his Ph.D. at Michigan State University in Resource Development. He has extensive experience in law and academia, having practiced in New York City before returning to academia. Kaplowitz is active in MSU's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR) program, focusing on student-athlete welfare and academic integrity. His academic interests include teaching courses related to community sustainability and conducting research on nonmarket valuation of ecosystems, among other topics. He has published extensively in recognized journals and co-authored significant scholarly works linked to environmental economics. Notably, in 2004, he received a Fulbright U.S. Scholars fellowship for teaching and research in Costa Rica. His research initiatives have received support from various governmental and environmental organizations.
