Biography

Michael Kapovich is a Distinguished Professor specializing in hyperbolic geometry, geometric topology, and geometric group theory. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1988 from the Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, in Novosibirsk. His research interests include low-dimensional geometry and topology, Kleinian groups, hyperbolic manifolds, configuration spaces, arrangements of mechanical linkages, and geometric representation theory of Lie groups. He has contributed significantly to the field with various publications and is known for his work on the representation varieties of finitely generated groups. His honors include receiving a gold medal from the Soviet Ministry of Higher Education for his master thesis in 1986 and numerous NSF grants awarded over several years.
