Biography

Michael Kassiou is a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and the Academic Director of the Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation at the University of Sydney. He earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of New South Wales in 1992. In 1993, he became a visiting scientist at CEA-Service Hospitalier Frédéric Joliot in France before taking a postdoctoral position at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes in the USA. He was awarded the Fogerty Fellowship in 1996, leading him to work at the National Institute of Drug Abuse in the USA. Subsequently, he returned to Sydney, where he worked as a Principal Hospital Scientist in the Department of PET and Nuclear Medicine at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Kassiou has published extensively in the fields of Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery, with a strong focus on Central Nervous System bioactive molecules and drug design. He has been instrumental in developing novel compounds for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, utilizing interdisciplinary modern organic chemistry techniques for drug design and synthesis. In addition to his academic role, he serves on various editorial boards and is a Fellow of several prestigious scientific organizations including the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
