Dr. Michael Kearns

Biography

Michael Kearns is a professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, where he holds the National Center Chair. He is the founding director of the Warren Center for Network and Data Sciences and has secondary appointments in the Economics Department of the Wharton School. His academic career includes significant research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, algorithmic game theory, and ethical algorithm design. Michael has also provided consulting services for various technology companies and venture capital firms, as well as serving as an expert witness for legal cases related to technology. Kearns completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, and earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Harvard University, where he was advised by Les Valiant. He spent a notable decade engaged in AI research at AT&T Bell Labs, and later he was involved in algorithmic trading on Wall Street before joining the faculty at Penn. His work focuses on the ethical implications of algorithmic processes in decision-making and the broader impacts on society and technology regulation.
