Biography

Michael R. King joined the Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria in July 2019. Prior to UVic, he was at the Ivey Business School from 2011 to 2019, where he held the Tangerine Chair of Finance and co-founded the Scotiabank Digital Banking Lab—Canada's FinTech research centre. He is the author of 'Fintech Explained: Technology Transforming Financial Services', published by Rotman UTP and adopted by more than 20 universities globally. Currently, Michael is studying how multinational enterprises and large domestic companies can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the 2015 Paris Agreement. Before entering academia, he spent two decades in investment banking from 1990 to 1998 and in central banking from 2001 to 2011 in New York, London, Zurich, Ottawa, and Basel. Michael completed his PhD at the London School of Economics in 2001 and earned his CFA designation in 1999. He teaches finance to undergraduates, MBAs, and executives, with research interests in climate finance, FinTech, banking, international finance, and corporate finance.
