Michael Kohl received a B.Sc in Neuroscience in 2005 from University College London, as part of the Wellcome Trust Oxford Ion Channel Initiative, and a D.Phil in Physiology in 2009 from the University of Oxford. He conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Cambridge and Stanford University from 2010 to 2011, followed by a position at the University of California, Berkeley from 2012 to 2013. In 2013, he became an Early Career Research Fellow in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and was appointed University Research Lecturer in 2018. He took a Senior Lectureship in Neuroscience at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at the University of Glasgow in 2018. His research laboratory focuses on neural activity in primary sensory cortices and how this integrates with activity in higher order cortices, particularly the retrosplenial cortex. He combines theoretical studies with experimental approaches to enhance the understanding of population codes and the information content in neural systems. His ongoing research interests include the role of interneurons in somatosensory perception, the interplay between the hippocampus and retrosplenial cortex in associative memory, and the development of novel tools for recording and manipulating large populations of neurons.
