Biography

Michael Krautblatter conducts research on natural hazards, particularly landslides and permafrost systems, since 2004. His main research areas focus on non-invasive quantification and monitoring of permafrost and unstable rock and soil slopes, aiming to quantify the magnitude and frequency of interconnectivity in landslides. He anticipates landslides based on thresholds and mechanical models to understand the systems involved. His research integrates theoretical, field-based, laboratory, and modeling approaches, particularly in international projects set in the Alps and Arctic environments. Currently, he is focused on establishing a new TUM landslides group dedicated to the long, mid, and short-term anticipation of landslides in alpine regions. Michael studied geography and geology at the University of Passau, University of Durham, and University of Erlangen. He completed his PhD (summa cum laude) on the destabilization of permafrost in alpine rock walls at the University of Bonn, after which he continued to lecture on geomorphology and environmental systems.
