Biography

Michael Long is the Thomas Suzanne Murphy Professor of Neuroscience and Physiology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He completed his graduate studies with Barry Connors at Brown University, where he investigated the role of electrical synapses in the mammalian brain. Following this, he engaged in postdoctoral research with Michale Fee at MIT, focusing on the songbird model to uncover the cellular network properties that give rise to learned vocal sequences. Since establishing his laboratory in 2010, Long has directed research on neural circuits underlying skilled movements and vocal interactions in various species, including songbirds, parrots, and humans. His laboratory employs a comparative approach to examine mechanisms relevant to vocal learning and has been funded by several grants, including federal support and foundation grants. Long's work has contributed significantly to the field of comparative neuroscience and our understanding of vocal communication.
