Biography

Professor Lucey specializes in French literature and culture from the 19th to the 21st centuries. He teaches social and literary criticism, critical theory, and sexuality studies, with a focus on 19th- and 20th-century British literature and culture, as well as 20th-century American literature and culture. His latest book, 'Proust Heard: Novels Ethnography Talk,' features discussions on Balzac, Eliot, Dostoevsky, Woolf, and Sarraute alongside Proust, published by the University of Chicago Press in early 2022. He is currently finishing a book titled 'Thinking Sexuality Novels.' Lucey has translated Didier Eribon’s 'Returning to Reims,' published in 2013, and Édouard Louis's 'The End of Eddy,' published in 2017. A forthcoming translation of Eribon's 'Life, Old Age, Death of a Working-Class Woman' is expected to appear in Spring 2025. He is the founding director of Berkeley’s Center for the Study of Sexual Culture, which sponsors lectures, conferences, fellowships, and workshops.
