Dr. Michael Marks

Biography

Michael S. Marks is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he focuses on the regulation of intracellular protein transport and organelle biogenesis. His research primarily investigates the biogenesis and function of melanosomes, vital organelles in pigmented cells responsible for melanin synthesis. Over the past 25 years, his work has contributed to understanding the genetic basis of various diseases, including Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome and Chediak-Higashi syndrome, which compromise melanosome function, leading to pigmentation disorders and immune system issues. Dr. Marks employs biochemical, morphological, and live cell imaging techniques to elucidate the molecular mechanisms regulating melanosome and related organelle dynamics. His lab also explores the role of lysosomal pH and melanosome transporters in skin pigmentation and the broader impacts of genetic alterations on organelle biogenesis. Michael's collaborative studies extend to understanding how defects in dendritic cells influence immune responses, particularly in patients with genetic disorders that lead to recurrent infections. He is actively involved in mentoring students and fellows in his lab at the Perelman School of Medicine.
