Biography

Professor Michael Mason is the Palestine Programme Director at the LSE Middle East Centre and serves as a Professor of Environmental Geography in the Department of Geography and Environment. He is also an Associate of the Grantham Research Institute for Climate Change and the Environment. Previously, he was the Director of the Centre from 2018 to 2025. His research focuses on ecological politics, governance issues, and applied questions concerning accountability, security, and sovereignty, particularly in the context of global environmental politics and regional environmental change in Western Asia and the Middle East. He has authored several influential works including 'Environmental Democracy' (1999) and 'New Accountability: Environmental Responsibility Borders' (2005), and he has co-edited publications such as 'Transparency in Global Environmental Governance' (2014) and 'Climate Policy and Politics in the Middle East' (2025). His expertise encompasses environmental policy, environmental security, climate change, and water infrastructure, specifically in relation to Lebanon, Iraq, and Israel/Palestine.
