Biography

Michael Brett McCarty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Duke University, with a dual appointment as an Assistant Research Professor of Theological Ethics and Associate Director of the Theology, Medicine, Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School. His scholarly work focuses on addiction, community engagement, bioethics, political theology, and theological ethics. McCarty's current research projects examine competing conceptions of agency in modern hospitals, explore religious responses to the opioid crisis, and develop interdisciplinary work at the intersection of theology and public health. He holds a Doctorate in Theology from Duke University, having completed his degree in 2018. McCarty has been awarded grants from the John Templeton Foundation and Interfaith America for his work in theology and public health initiatives. He participates in the Faculty Success Program at the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity and has contributed to discussions on the opioid epidemic in Appalachia. His courses include 'Cultivating Christian Imagination II' and 'Directed Study' within the theological disciplines.
