Biography

Michael Sean McMurtry is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia in 1994, attended medical school at Dalhousie University in 1998, and completed his PhD at the University of Alberta in 2006. He furthered his education with a Vascular Medicine fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston in 2007. His clinical interests and expertise lie in non-invasive general cardiology and vascular medicine. Dr. McMurtry currently serves as the Medical Director of the Anticoagulant Management Service at the University of Alberta, where he is responsible for managing an active thoracic aortic disease program. His research focuses on outcomes related to coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, venous thromboembolism, and thoracic aortic disease, supported by funding from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He also chairs the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Guidelines Committee.
