Biography

Michael Monument is an orthopedic surgeon scientist specializing in the diagnosis and surgical management of musculoskeletal neoplasms in children and adults. He completed his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University of Calgary, where he also underwent orthopaedic surgery training. He spent several years at the University of Utah's Huntsman Cancer Institute sub-specializing in sarcoma and musculoskeletal oncology surgery. His research focuses on musculoskeletal oncology, particularly developing inducible syngeneic mouse models for bone and soft tissue sarcomas and investigating immunotherapy strategies to enhance the immune response to sarcomas. Additionally, he directs the integrated Sarcoma Research Program, collaborating with the Alberta Cancer Foundation to advance clinical sarcoma research initiatives. His work aims to improve care delivery and surgical outcomes for cancer patients, particularly those with metastatic bone disease. Michael is also engaged in patient-centered research, analyzing patient-reported outcomes to better understand the impact of treatment on quality of life. He leads a research group that accepts applications for various positions to support both clinical and pre-clinical research initiatives.
