Michael holds an MA (by Research Thesis) and a PhD in interdisciplinary studies from the Institute of Science and Society at the University of Nottingham. He obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of St. Andrews in 2000. Michael served as the Principal Investigator for the ESRC-funded project 'Biomodifying technologies in experimental space' from 2017 to 2020, as well as collaborating on a sister project 'BioGov: Governing biomodification in the life sciences' alongside Professor Kaye. His projects focus on the collaboration between researchers from the Universities of Oxford, Sussex, and York to examine 'gateway technologies' and their applications in medicine and the life sciences. This includes gene editing, induced pluripotent stem cells, and 3D printing of living materials. These technologies allow researchers to modify living biological tissue in increasingly patient-oriented and customized ways, challenging the suitability of traditional manufacturing and governance reimbursement pathways designed for small molecule pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Michael has also contributed to various biomedical research projects.
