Biography

Mike Motley received his Ph.D. from Princeton University with a focus on Civil and Environmental Engineering, specifically structural engineering mechanics. He has spent years in academia, including post-doctoral work in the Department of Naval Architecture at the University of Michigan. Professor Motley has developed a unique research expertise in the mechanics and dynamics of fluids as well as structural mechanics responses to large-scale marine structures. Currently, his research focuses on load prediction for large wave events, such as tsunamis, and the responses of coastal structures to multi-hazard phenomena associated with subduction zone events. He is actively investigating passive control techniques for structural response and is working on horizontal axis marine hydrodynamic turbine systems, as well as exploiting bend-twist coupling mechanisms to improve the performance of composite marine structures.
