Michael O’Sullivan is an Associate Professor specializing in comparative, international, and global citizenship education. In addition to teaching in elementary and secondary schools, as well as community colleges and universities, he has worked professionally and held volunteer positions in community development projects throughout numerous Latin American countries. His Master’s thesis in Political Science analyzed the democratically elected socialist government of Salvador Allende in Chile during the early 1970s, a period in which he lived in Chile. His doctoral dissertation focused on efforts in post-conflict Guatemala to help the Mayan people transform the national curriculum to reflect the historical and contemporary contributions of the Indigenous population, which constitutes 50% of the country's demographics. Currently, his research interests include investigating the impact of International Service Learning (ISL) trips on marginal rural communities in Global South countries, as well as the influence of Global Northern visitors on host communities. His previous research has examined classroom teaching from a critical global perspective, experiences of Chinese students studying in Canada, and the inter-generational responses of Cuban youth to change in Cuba. Beyond his work at Brock University, he serves as a board member of Casa Canadiense – Pueblito Canada, an NGO that supports small community-based projects in Nicaragua and facilitates intensive study abroad experiences for high school, college, and university students from Ontario and Quebec.
