Biography

Michael Palmer is an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Western Australia. His research focuses on the economic and social consequences of ill-health and disability. He is particularly interested in the role of public policy in shaping equality of opportunities and notions of economic justice and human rights to facilitate positive change. Michael has served as the Graduate Research Coordinator at the UWA Business School and has been recognized for his work with the 2021 Excellence Teaching Award in the Post-Graduate category. Prior to joining UWA, he held several academic positions, including Head of Discipline and Senior Lecturer in Economics at RMIT in Vietnam, Research Fellow at the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne, and Managing Director of the Vietnamese-Dutch Masters in Development Economics Program. In addition to his academic roles, he has served as the Asia-Pacific Regional Coordinator for the Disability Data Initiative and as a Promotions Publicity Officer with the United Nations Association of Australia (NSW branch). Michael is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. His expertise encompasses Disability, Health, and Social and Welfare Issues.
