Biography

Michael S. Parmacek, MD, is the Frank Wister Thomas Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University and received his M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School. Dr. Parmacek completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan and a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Northwestern University. Following his clinical training, he undertook a postdoctoral research fellowship in molecular cardiology at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Michigan. From 1987 to 1992, he was a faculty member at the University of Michigan and then moved to the University of Chicago from 1992 to 1998, where he was Co-Director of the cardiology fellowship training program. In 1998, Dr. Parmacek joined the University of Pennsylvania as the Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, leading it to become a top-tier national program during his tenure until 2014. He also directed the University of Pennsylvania Cardiovascular Institute from 2005 until 2017. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of the molecular genetic basis of congenital heart disease and atherosclerosis, resulting in over ninety publications in high-impact journals. Dr. Parmacek has been recognized as an Established Investigator by the American Heart Association and has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians.
