Biography

Michael Plummer is the Eni Professor of International Economics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS Europe). He has had a significant academic and professional career, holding positions such as Director at SAIS Europe from 2014 to 2023 and previously serving as an associate professor at Brandeis University from 1992 to 2001. Plummer is known for his leadership in the field, having been the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian Economics (Elsevier) and President of the American Committee on Asian Economic Studies from 2008 to 2015. His expertise encompasses various international economic matters, and he has advised governments on trade negotiations, including the Transpacific Partnership (TPP). Plummer has published extensively, authoring or co-authoring over 100 journal articles and book chapters, and he has edited 28 books. His education includes a PhD in economics from Michigan State University. His research interests focus on ASEAN economies, economic cooperation, and trade integration within Asia, as well as broader international economic policies. Michael has lectured at numerous universities worldwide and is recognized for his contributions to understanding the dynamics of globalization and economic policy.
