Biography

Michael Provence teaches modern Middle East history with a focus on 20th century Arab East. He earned his B.A. in History from the University of California, Berkeley in 1994 and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2001. As a Fellow, he has worked at the Institut d’Études Avancées de Nantes in France and the Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin, Germany. Provence is also a visiting professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne for the academic year 2024-2025. He has authored notable works including 'The Great Syrian Revolt and the Rise of Arab Nationalism,' published in 2005, and 'The Ottoman Generation and the Making of the Modern Middle East,' released in 2017 by Cambridge University Press. His extensive research has led him through various Middle Eastern countries, particularly Syria and Lebanon, where he has lived and studied for several years. Provence's works are recognized in multiple languages, signifying their impact and relevance in understanding Middle Eastern history.
