Dr. Michael Putnam

Biography

Michael Putnam has been an influential figure in the field of Classics since joining the Brown University faculty in 1960, following a year at Smith College. He served as the Acting Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies during the 1961-62 academic year and held significant positions such as the Mellon Professor in Charge of the Classical School between 1989 and 1991. A prominent scholar, Putnam's work primarily focuses on Latin literature, particularly the poetry of the Republican and Augustan periods. His extensive research has resulted in several notable publications on Virgil, Catullus, and other classical authors, contributing significantly to the understanding of their influence and traditions.
