Biography

Michael Ranes' research lab focuses on the Wnt signaling pathway and its molecular mechanisms in cell signaling. Cells continuously respond to a wide variety of external and internal stimuli, and it is crucial for them to accurately transmit input signals to elicit the desired biological outcomes. The ability to modulate and terminate signaling pathways is equally important. Hence, it is not surprising that dysregulation of cell signaling pathways is associated with human diseases. Understanding the functional pathways at a molecular level is of great importance, particularly in the context of the Wnt signaling pathway, which is a significant cell signaling cascade in metazoans. This pathway regulates key processes such as embryonic development, tissue regeneration, and overall adult tissue homeostasis. Consequently, alterations in this pathway are linked to severe developmental defects and human disorders, notably cancer. Ranes is particularly interested in Wnt/beta-catenin signaling and has gained insight into the mechanisms that ensure the pathway remains inactive when needed, and how its impairment contributes to cancer. However, the molecular mechanisms governing the activation and termination of this pathway remain largely unknown. His research encompasses biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, and cell-based approaches, all aimed at understanding the mechanisms driving Wnt pathway activation and termination in health and disease settings.
