Biography

Michael Reimer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, where he is also affiliated with the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Waterloo and then worked as an R&D Engineer at JDS Uniphase before pursuing a Master of Science in Engineering Physics at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics in 2010 at the University of Ottawa/National Research Council Canada. From 2009 to 2014, he served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Delft, where he contributed significantly to the development of solid-state quantum devices. His work included creating single photon sources and single electron devices, which are essential for efficient quantum technologies. In 2013, he played a key role in founding Single Quantum, a startup focused on developing highly efficient single-photon detectors using superconducting nanowires. His current research interests include advancing quantum technologies, creating efficient interfaces for quantum bits, and developing tunable quantum light sources.
