Michael Richards is an archaeological scientist specializing in isotopic analysis to determine past human and animal diets and adaptations. He has returned to Simon Fraser University as a Professor in the Department of Archaeology, after holding significant positions including Professor in the Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. He has also served as a Professor in the Department of Archaeological Sciences at the University of Bradford and in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Durham in the UK. Michael is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His research interests are focused on the evolution of human diets over time, specifically the diets of Neanderthals and early modern humans, as well as the spread and adoption of agriculture across Eurasia. He is currently developing new isotope systems for dietary migration studies and uses isotope analysis to explore and catalogue the range and nature of human dietary adaptations throughout the Holocene.
