Michael Rossi is a historian of science and medicine in the United States from 1800 to the present. His research focuses primarily on sensation, aesthetics, and the modern (human) body, with particular interest in whales. He is the author of 'Republic of Color: Science, Perception, and Making Modern America' published by the University of Chicago Press in 2019 and will be releasing 'Capturing Kahanamoku: Surfing Legend and Scientific Obsession Redefined' with HarperOne in 2025. In addition to his role in the History Department, he is a faculty member of the Committee on Conceptual Historical Studies of Science, the Committee on Environment, Geography, and Urbanization, and the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Prior to his appointment at the University of Chicago, Michael was a postdoctoral fellow at the Groupe Histoire des sciences de l’homme at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan in France. He earned his PhD in history, anthropology, and science, technology, and society from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and holds an AB from Columbia University.
