Biography

Michael L. Roukes is the Frank J. Roshek Professor at the California Institute of Technology, where he is also the Director of the Kavli Nanoscience Institute. He has held prominent positions at Caltech since joining as an Associate Professor in 1992, becoming a Professor in 1996 and subsequently serving as the Abbey Professor and then the Roshek Professor. His research interests lie primarily in the fields of physics, applied physics, and bioengineering, encompassing a wide range of topics within nanoscience. Roukes has made significant contributions to the understanding of nanoscale phenomena and the development of new technologies based on nanostructures. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1978, before completing his Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1985. Roukes has also held leadership roles in various capacities at Caltech, specifically as the Director of the Kavli Nanoscience Institute from 2004 to 2006 and as Co-Director from 2008 to 2013.
