Biography

Michael Sattler focuses on the development and application of biomolecular nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in integrative structural biology. His research aims to describe the structure, dynamics, and molecular interactions of biological macromolecules, such as proteins and RNAs, as well as small molecules that resemble drug-like compounds. This research provides critical insights into the basic molecular mechanisms that underlie fundamental biological processes and disease pathways. Sattler completed his doctorate in chemistry in 1995 at J.W. Goethe University Frankfurt. He then pursued research at Abbott Laboratories in Chicago under Dr. Stephen W. Fesik. In 1997, he became a group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. He has been a full professor in the chemistry department at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since 2007. Sattler also serves as the Director of the Institute of Structural Biology at Helmholtz Zentrum München and the Bavarian NMR Center, contributing extensively to the field through his leadership and research efforts.
