Biography

Michael E. Schaepman studied geography, experimental physics, and informatics at the University of Zurich, earning his doctoral degree from the Department of Geography in 1998. Following his postdoctoral work at the University of Arizona in Tucson, he returned to the University of Zurich in 2000, where he has been the head of a research group. In 2003, Schaepman was appointed a professor of geographic information science at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, serving as the academic head of the Center for Geoinformation until 2009 when he returned to the University of Zurich. His expertise lies in Earth observation, remote sensing, and spectroscopy for measuring biodiversity from space. He was appointed Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science in 2014, and later held roles as Vice President of Research and Academic Career Development and President of the University of Zurich. He is an active researcher with ongoing projects related to ecological genomics and biodiversity, leading multiple initiatives with international collaborations.
