Biography

Michael H. Schill is the 17th president of Northwestern University, having taken office on September 12, 2022. He serves as a professor at both the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and Kellogg School of Management, specializing in finance and real estate. Schill previously served as president of the University of Oregon for seven years, where he significantly improved the university's profile in teaching, research, and student access. Under his leadership, the University of Oregon launched several initiatives, including the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact and the Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health. Schill is a nationally recognized expert in property, real estate, and housing law policy, and has authored or co-authored more than 40 scholarly articles. His notable works include a widely adopted casebook on property law. He has held distinguished positions at the University of Chicago and UCLA as a dean and faculty member, and was instrumental in founding NYU’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy. Schill began his career as a law clerk for the Honorable Marvin Katz and worked as a real estate attorney in New York City.
