Biography

Prof. Michael Schloter focuses his research on microbiome research, particularly interested in the interaction between environmental microbiota and host microbiomes, as well as the human microbiome. He employs modern cultivation-independent 'omics' based approaches to characterize the structure and function of microbiomes, as well as to isolate significant microorganisms for laboratory study. After studying biology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1984 to 1989, he received his PhD from the University of Bayreuth in 1994. Following postdoctoral positions, he became the head of the working group on Microbial Ecology at the Institute of Soil Ecology of the GSF Research Center in 2003. In 2009, he was appointed as an honorary professor of Soil Microbiology at TUM. In 2011, he became the head of the Institute for Comparative Microbiome Analysis at Helmholtz Zentrum München. In 2023, he was appointed to the Professorship of Environmental Microbiology at TUM.
