Dr. Michael Shamos

Biography

Michael Shamos is a Distinguished Career Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, where he serves as the Director of the MSIT eBusiness Technology Program. He obtained his A.B. in Physics from Princeton in 1968, and completed his M.A. in Physics at Vassar College in 1970. From 1970 to 1972, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service and worked as a Supervisory Programmer at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Shamos then earned his M.S. and M.Phil. in Computer Science from Yale University, with a focus on algorithms in Computational Geometry. He joined Carnegie Mellon in 1975, quickly becoming a key figure in the development of introductory programming courses and graduate analysis of algorithms. Following a distinguished legal and academic career, he co-founded Unilogic, later serving as a Principal Systems Scientist at CMU. Shamos has played a significant role in electronic voting technology, examining voting systems across several states and testifying before Congress on the matter. In addition to his academic and legal contributions, he has authored numerous publications and served as an expert witness in over 160 cases.
