Biography

Michael J. Shelley is the Lilian George Lyttle Professor of Applied Mathematics at New York University, where he also serves as Co-Director of the Applied Mathematics Laboratory. His research focuses on understanding complex phenomena arising in active matter, biophysics, complex fluids, and intricate fluid-structure problems related to swimming and flying. Shelley employs mathematical modeling, analysis, and simulation techniques, collaborating closely with experimentalists in biology and physics. Much of his research is conducted within the Applied Mathematics Laboratory, which he co-founded. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Arizona, obtained in 1985, as well as an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the same institution in 1984, and a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Colorado, earned in 1981. His scholarly contributions are reflected in numerous publications, and he maintains a professional presence on platforms like Google Scholar.
